How to file for the VA burial allowance

Estimated time: 45 minutes | Typical cost: Free

Why this matters

The VA pays up to $2,000 for a service connected death and up to $948 for a non service connected death of an eligible veteran. The funds reimburse burial expenses already paid by the family.

Step by step

  1. Confirm eligibility. The veteran must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. The person filing must have paid the burial expenses.
  2. Locate the DD-214 (discharge papers). If not found, request from the National Personnel Records Center.
  3. Complete VA Form 21P-530 (Application for Burial Benefits).
  4. Attach: a certified death certificate, the DD-214, an itemized funeral bill marked paid, and proof of relationship if you are not the spouse.
  5. Submit through eBenefits, by mail, or through a Veterans Service Organization (VSO) such as VFW, DAV, or American Legion, which file claims at no cost.
  6. Track the claim status through eBenefits or by calling 1-800-827-1000.
  7. Payment typically arrives within 3 to 6 months of filing.
