How to notify Social Security of a death

Estimated time: 30 minutes (phone) | Typical cost: Free

Why this matters

Social Security must be notified promptly. Failing to notify means continued payments are sent that must later be returned, sometimes with collection action. Notification also starts the process for the one time death payment and survivor benefits.

Step by step

  1. Most funeral homes report deaths to Social Security automatically as a courtesy. Confirm with yours that they will do this.
  2. If the funeral home does not, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778). You cannot report a death online.
  3. You will need: the deceased's Social Security number, date of birth, date of death, and place of death.
  4. If the deceased was receiving Social Security benefits, the payment for the month of death must be returned (Social Security does not pay a partial month).
  5. Apply for the one time $255 death payment, which goes to a surviving spouse or to a child eligible for benefits.
  6. Apply for survivor benefits if you are a surviving spouse, surviving divorced spouse (in some cases), or dependent child. Use Form SSA-10 (spouse) or SSA-4 (child).
  7. Get a receipt confirmation. Write down the date you called and the representative's name in case there is any question later.

Frequently asked questions

When should I notify Social Security?

Within the first week after death is ideal. The funeral home often does this for you, but always confirm.

Do I get the last Social Security check?

No. Social Security does not pay benefits for the month of death, even partially. If a payment was sent for that month, it must be returned.

What is the $255 death payment?

A one time lump sum paid to a surviving spouse who was living with the deceased, or to a child eligible for benefits if there is no spouse.

Can I apply for survivor benefits online?

No. Survivor benefit applications must be made by phone or in person at a Social Security office.

How long do survivor benefits take to start?

Typically 30 to 60 days from application. Bring all documentation (death certificate, marriage certificate, birth certificates) to your appointment.
