How to cancel Medicare after a death

Estimated time: 20 minutes (phone) | Typical cost: Free

Why this matters

Medicare coverage ends on the date of death. Notifying promptly prevents continued premium charges and stops any further benefit payments that would need to be returned.

Step by step

  1. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to report the death. You can also report through the Social Security Administration since they share death information.
  2. Provide the deceased's Medicare number, date of birth, and date of death.
  3. If the deceased had a Medicare Advantage plan or Part D plan, also notify that private insurer directly.
  4. If they had a Medigap (supplemental) policy, notify that insurer as well.
  5. Watch for refunds of any premiums paid after the date of death. Medicare will refund prorated amounts.
  6. Watch for final medical bills. Doctors and hospitals may continue submitting claims to Medicare for services delivered before death; these process normally.
  7. Keep all explanations of benefits (EOBs) and bills for the estate inventory and final tax return.

Common mistakes to avoid

What to do if you get stuck

If you receive bills for services after the date of death, write "deceased" on the bill and return with a copy of the death certificate. The estate is not responsible for services not actually rendered.
